Shopify Payments charges every online sale a percentage-based processing rate plus a small fixed fee per transaction, and that rate steps down as a store moves up Shopify’s subscription tiers (Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus) — merchants who use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments also pay an extra transaction fee on top. Because these percentage-plus-fixed charges apply to every single order regardless of size, they eat a disproportionate share of the margin on lower-priced items.

This calculator subtracts the product cost and the payment fee (percentage plus fixed) from the sale price to show the net profit and margin per unit. It is the same math a merchant would use to check whether a price point still clears a target margin once the platform’s cut of each transaction is accounted for — it does not include the monthly subscription fee, shipping, or ad spend, which need to be layered on separately.
