About this calculator

This tool scans a block of text character by character, sorting each letter into vowels (a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y) or consonants, while ignoring spaces, digits, and punctuation, then reports the totals and the vowel-to-consonant ratio.

Students and teachers use it for phonics exercises and spelling drills, writers and editors use it to check the rhythm and readability of a passage (heavily consonant-clustered text tends to read as denser or harsher), and programmers use it as a quick sanity check when testing string-processing or text-analysis code.
