About this calculator

A weighted grade combines scores from different categories — homework, quizzes, exams, participation — according to the percentage weight each category is assigned in a course syllabus, rather than simply averaging every score equally. The calculation multiplies each category's grade by its weight, adds those products together, and divides by the total of the weights: weighted average = Σ(grade × weight) / Σ(weight).

This is how the overwhelming majority of school and university courses actually calculate a final grade, since a syllabus that states "exams are 50%, homework 20%, participation 30%" is describing exactly this weighted-sum structure — a straight unweighted average of raw scores would give homework and a final exam equal importance, which almost no grading policy intends.

This calculator takes each category's grade and its weight and returns your overall weighted grade.
