About this calculator

Brix measures the dissolved sugar content of grape must, and a wine’s alcohol by volume can be estimated from the drop in Brix (or specific gravity) between the starting must and the finished dry wine, using an approximate conversion factor — commonly around Brix times 0.55, or a more precise potential-alcohol table.

Winemakers and home vintners use it to predict or verify a wine’s final alcohol content both before and after fermentation, which matters for hitting label requirements and staying true to a target style.

This calculator takes your starting and final Brix readings and returns the estimated ABV percentage.
