About this calculator

Body frame size — small, medium or large — is estimated from the ratio of height to wrist circumference, sometimes called the frame index: a smaller wrist relative to height indicates a small frame, while a proportionally larger wrist indicates a large one. The method traces back to the frame-size tables used alongside Metropolitan Life Insurance's height-weight charts, which recognized that two people of the same height can have very different healthy weight ranges depending on their underlying bone and joint structure.

Personal trainers, nutritionists and fitness enthusiasts use frame size to adjust ideal body weight ranges and body composition goals, since applying a single weight target to every person of a given height ignores real differences in skeletal build — a large-framed person carrying the "ideal" weight for their height may actually be underweight for their frame, and vice versa.

This calculator takes your height and wrist circumference and returns your estimated body frame size, so you can use a weight or body composition target that fits your actual build rather than a one-size-fits-all chart.
