About this calculator

Body frame size — small, medium, or large — is traditionally estimated from the ratio between a person's height and their wrist circumference, an approach popularized by Metropolitan Life Insurance's height-weight tables in the 20th century. A person with a relatively thin wrist for their height is classified as small-framed, while a proportionally thicker wrist indicates a large frame.

Frame size matters because “ideal weight” tables and ranges were originally built around it — the same height can have a healthy weight range that shifts up or down depending on whether someone has a small or large bone structure. This calculator takes your height and wrist measurement and classifies your frame using the standard height-to-wrist-circumference ratio thresholds.
