HR and operations teams track it monthly or quarterly to benchmark against industry norms, spot departments or shifts with unusually high absenteeism, and estimate the productivity and coverage cost of unplanned absence. A rising rate over time is often used as an early warning sign for burnout, low morale, or workplace conditions that need attention.
