About this calculator

Current yield is simply the bond's annual coupon payment divided by its current market price — not its face value — so it tells you the income return you'd get buying the bond today at whatever price it's trading for.

Because bond prices move inversely to interest rates, a bond bought below par (a discount) has a current yield higher than its stated coupon rate, while one bought above par (a premium) has a lower one. Bond traders and fixed-income investors use current yield as a fast income snapshot, though it ignores capital gain or loss at maturity — which is why it's paired with yield to maturity for a fuller picture.
