Coffee Ratio Calculator

Find the coffee for your brew.

Result

31.2 g

How it is calculated

The amount of ground coffee is coffee = water / ratio. Water is the weight of water in grams (1 ml of water weighs about 1 g) and ratio is the number of parts of water per one part of coffee, so a 1:16 brew is entered as 16. If the ratio is empty or not above zero, the tool uses 16 as the default. Negative water returns nothing. The answer is rounded to one decimal in grams. A smaller ratio (for example 15) makes a stronger brew with more coffee, and a bigger ratio (for example 17) makes it lighter. Some water stays in the grounds, so the cup holds slightly less liquid than the water you poured.

Worked example

You want to brew with 500 g of water at a 1:16 ratio. Coffee = 500 / 16 = 31.25 g, which the tool rounds to 31.3 g. Using a 1:15 ratio instead would give 33.3 g, a slightly stronger cup.

Common mistakes

  • Typing 1:16 as 1.16 or as 0.0625; enter just 16.
  • Entering the ratio the wrong way round (1 for 1:16), which returns as much coffee as water.
  • Measuring water in cups or ounces while the answer is in grams; weigh both on a scale.
  • Expecting the finished cup to equal the water weight, when the grounds absorb some of it.
  • Rounding the result to a convenient scoop instead of weighing; 31.25 g is about a gram away from 31 g or 32 g.

About this calculator

This calculator turns a brew ratio (like 1:16 for pour-over or 1:15 for drip) into an exact amount of ground coffee for the water you're using, or the other way around if you start from how much coffee you have.

Home baristas dial in their morning cup with it, and coffee shops use the same ratios to keep every batch consistent between staff. Different brew methods call for different ratios — espresso, French press, and cold brew all sit far apart on the scale — so having the math handled removes the guesswork.
