About this calculator

Employee turnover rate is a core HR metric calculated as the number of employees who left (separations) during a period divided by the average headcount over that same period, expressed as a percentage. It is usually tracked monthly and annualized, and can be broken into voluntary turnover (resignations) versus involuntary turnover (layoffs, terminations) for deeper analysis.

A high turnover rate signals rising recruiting and training costs, lost institutional knowledge, and often points to compensation, management, or culture problems, while an unusually low rate can sometimes indicate stagnation. HR teams and executives use this rate to benchmark against industry averages and to measure the impact of retention initiatives. This calculator divides separations by average headcount to give you the turnover rate as a percentage.
