About this calculator

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale, developed by Dr. Murray Johns in 1990, is a short self-assessment that scores how likely you are to doze off in eight everyday situations — reading, watching TV, sitting inactive in a public place, riding as a passenger for an hour, lying down to rest in the afternoon, sitting and talking with someone, sitting quietly after a lunch without alcohol, and stopped in traffic for a few minutes. Each situation is rated 0 (would never doze) to 3 (high chance of dozing), and the eight scores sum to a total between 0 and 24.

A total score above 10 is generally considered a sign of excessive daytime sleepiness and is one of the standard first screening tools clinicians use before investigating conditions like obstructive sleep apnea or narcolepsy, though the scale on its own does not diagnose any disorder — it only flags whether daytime sleepiness is high enough to warrant further evaluation. It is widely used in sleep clinics, general practice, and self-tracking because it takes only a couple of minutes and needs no equipment.

Rate your chance of dozing in each of the eight situations, and the calculator totals your Epworth score and shows where it falls.
