About this calculator

This calculator finds a score's percentile rank using the direct empirical formula PR = (number of values below the score ÷ total number of values) × 100, sometimes with a half-count adjustment for values tied with the score. This differs from a z-score-based percentile: it works directly from an actual dataset's ranking, with no assumption that the data follows a normal distribution, making it the more appropriate method whenever the underlying distribution is unknown or skewed.

Teachers and test administrators use it to interpret how a student's score compares to the rest of a class or cohort, HR professionals use it to benchmark a salary or performance score against a comparison group, sports analysts use it to rank an athlete's statistic within a league, and researchers use it whenever they need a distribution-free way to express relative standing. Enter a score along with the dataset (or the count below it) to get the percentile rank.
