About this calculator

USDA food-safety guidance gives two safe ways to thaw a frozen turkey, both scaled to the bird's weight: in the refrigerator (roughly 24 hours for every 4–5 pounds, since it stays below 40°F the whole time), or in a cold-water bath with the water changed every 30 minutes (roughly 30 minutes per pound, much faster but requiring active attention). Thawing at room temperature isn't a safe option because the surface spends too long in the bacterial danger zone.

This calculator takes the turkey's weight and returns both estimated thaw times, so you can work backward from your planned cooking day to figure out when to move the bird from the freezer to the fridge, or when to start a cold-water thaw if you're short on time. Home cooks planning Thanksgiving or a holiday roast use it every year to avoid the common mistake of starting a large turkey's thaw too late.
