About this calculator

The Rockport Fitness Walking Test, developed by Kline and colleagues in 1987, estimates VO₂max from a simple 1-mile walk instead of a maximal treadmill run. You walk the mile as fast as you comfortably can, then plug your finish time, heart rate immediately at the end, weight, age, and sex into the formula: VO₂max = 132.853 − (0.0769 × weight in lb) − (0.3877 × age) + (6.315 × sex, where male = 1 and female = 0) − (3.2649 × time in minutes) − (0.1565 × ending heart rate).

Because it only requires a fast walk rather than an all-out run, it is a submaximal test that is widely used in exercise physiology labs, corporate wellness screenings, and cardiac rehabilitation programs for people who are older, deconditioned, or otherwise not suitable candidates for a maximal exertion test. It has been validated against directly measured lab VO₂max in multiple studies and is considered one of the more reliable field-test alternatives.

Enter your walk time, ending heart rate, weight, age, and sex, and this calculator returns your estimated VO₂max in mL/kg/min.
