About this calculator

This calculator uses the Tanaka formula, HRmax = 208 − 0.7 × age, published by Tanaka, Monahan, and Seals in 2001 after pooling data from over 18,000 subjects — a meta-analysis-backed replacement for the old rule-of-thumb 220 − age, which was never based on a rigorous study and tends to underestimate HRmax in older adults.

Personal trainers, cardiac rehab programs, and fitness apps use HRmax as the anchor for setting heart-rate training zones (fat-burn, aerobic, threshold, and VO2max zones are all defined as percentages of it), so a more accurate HRmax estimate directly translates into more accurate, individualized training targets.
