About this calculator
Light travels at a fixed c = 299,792.458 km/s in vacuum, so the time to cross any distance is simply t = d/c — the same relationship behind the definition of a light-year (the distance light covers in one Julian year) and behind the light-minute or light-second units astronomers use for closer distances. Because this speed is a universal constant, it also sets the ultimate speed limit for any signal or information, not just visible light.
Astronomers use light travel time to describe how "old" the light from a distant star or galaxy is by the time it reaches us — meaning we see these objects not as they are now, but as they were when the light left them — while spacecraft engineers use it to calculate communication delay with probes like the Mars rovers, where a round-trip command-and-response can take over 20 minutes. It's also a standard way to build intuition for astronomical scale in science education.
