About this calculator
Unpopped popcorn kernels expand roughly 35 to 45 times their original volume when popped, so a small amount of kernels goes much further than it looks — a standard estimate is that ¼ cup of kernels yields about 8 cups of popped popcorn, with oil scaled at roughly 1–2 tablespoons and salt at about ¼ to ½ teaspoon per ¼ cup of kernels, depending on how rich and salty the result is meant to be.
This expansion ratio comes from the physics of popping itself: superheated moisture trapped inside the kernel's hard shell flashes to steam and bursts the hull, and the ratio of raw to popped volume is remarkably consistent across batches of the same kernel type, which is why commercial popcorn vendors and recipe developers can scale a formula reliably from a snack-sized batch to a party-sized one.
Home cooks planning movie-night snacks, concession-stand and party caterers scaling up batches, and recipe writers converting between kernel weight and finished popcorn volume all use this ratio to avoid the common mistake of popping either far too little or far too much.
